What are the initials on the circular shield? Can someone translate for us, please?

The Cross, vertical: C-S-"S"-M-L, on the horizontal: N-D-"S"-M-D, the S in parenthesis is shared.

Clockwise from the 12 position: V-R-S-N-S-M-V, clockwise from the 6 position: S-M-O-L-I-V-B

I am not sure what they are abbreviating or are a symbol of, I am sure it is Latin, more than that I am not sure. I hope this answer a small part of your question, some one such as a priest or academic in early biblical history could tell you what it means.

I did find out it is the St. Benedict Medal on the pommel.
