Back in the 80's ,a guy I knew popped a couple of rounds at a car doing that to his box about a hundred yards away with a snub nose 38. Unfortunately ,he killed someone in the back seat . Some rich kid who just got back from Europe , would have saved humanity of it only be had not died(sarc). It's a federal crime to damage mail boxes.
