Companies go through good times and bad. "Profits" pay wages when times are slow. You can ask any person who owns a construction firm. If they paid out all of the "profits" as wages then they would not be able to pay for materials when prices went up or keep workers on projects that lost money.

As a union retiree, I saw the boss keep us busy during the bad times so he would have a crew during the" good times" . You can't work at a company that is broke.
