You would be surprised at how often this is used...

We handle these on almost a weekly basis. The call comes from dispatch to stage for the state police for a psych evaluation. The state police go in first while we sit nearby waiting for the "all clear." These calls run the gamut from someone voluntarily seeking help to the ones requiring to be "papered" with a P.E.E.R. (Police Emergency Examination Request) and sometimes hog-tied to the stretcher with padded restraints, flailing and screaming. Back when I started in EMS, we did things with violent nuts we can't do today. We carried an actual straight jacket, and also did a technique called the "backboard sandwich." The patient would be pig-piled on and pinned down, then placed between two long boards strapped together. They would be picked up as a unit and placed on the stretcher face down.

Glypto, I was a psych nurse and a Behavioral Specialist, I know and I had the opportunity on numerous occasions to use restraints and even early on straight jackets. I know of what you speak of. We had several people that would come in on a regular basis for 72 hour voluntary hold... just to be away from families, obligations.
