Not a waste of cast iron, can be brought back.

Seems like I keep a batch of cast iron in my electrolysis bath these days. I've seen many pans crack after they've been run through the oven self cleaning setting. Or like the guy around the corner that had a really nice Griswold and put it in his fireplace, cracked it almost in half. Electrolysis may take longer but it doesn't destroy cast iron.
