Google And NASA Team Up And Buy Quantum Super Computer

I wonder if they named it Hal?

This Quantum computer is orders of magnitude faster than an ordinary computer and operates on a different system of problem solving using something called a "qbit".

Normal computers use 1's and 0's like on off switches to store information.
Quantum computers treat the 1 or 0 as either being just that, or both at the same time.

This stuff will make your head hurt trying to comprehend.

While regular computers symbolize data in bits, 1s and 0s expressed by flicking tiny switch-like transistors on or off, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, that can essentially be both on and off, enabling them to carry out two or more calculations simultaneously. In principle, quantum computers could prove extraordinarily much faster than normal computers for certain problems because they can run through every possible combination at once. In fact, a quantum computer with 300 qubits could run more calculations in an instant than there are atoms in the universe.

Stop and let that sink in for a minute.

The collaboration between NASA, Google, and the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) aims to use its computer to advance machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence devoted to developing computers that can improve with experience. Machine learning is a matter of optimizing behavior that may be easier for quantum computers than conventional machines.

If they want, they could turn this thing loose and break just about any encryption key they wanted to.
At an estimated fifteen million dollars a copy, that is chump change for the spooks in our government.

Has this sunk in yet?

Do you not think that maybe outfits like the NSA or the CIA might be lined up with wheel barrows full of cash already?

Oh, wait, I guess that was a stupid question.

I find it funny in a hundred monkey's kind of way. You got a few hundred trained monkeys furiously typing at keyboards connected to hardware they barely understand. And they gonna replicate the entire works of Shakespeare. Truthfully, it's gonna play an awesome game of world of war craft. The joint chiefs will get their porn delivered faster. Shame all that hardware wasted on those cretins.
