Do You Think This Can't Happen Here?

HIGH RIVER, Alta. — The RCMP revealed Thursday that officers had seized a “substantial” number of firearms from homes in the evacuated town of High River, about 37 kilometres south Calgary.

“We just want to make sure that all of those things are in a spot that we control, simply because of what they are,” said Sgt. Brian Topham. “People have a significant amount of money invested in firearms … so we put them in a place that we control and that they’re safe.”

It's been done here before.

Remember Katrina?

Beings as this happened in Canada, I will be anxiously waiting to see the repercussions unfold.

I'm thinking I need to sit down and work through some scenarios and do some strategic redeployments.
I am also thinking I am way the hell overdue to get me a modern day Peace Maker too.
.

Because I have my wifes kids here I have some extra concerns to worry about with this aspect.
One child is a fifteen year old boy who really hasn't had much in the way of a Father figure while growing up and the other is a thirty year old autistic adult.
Unfortunately he is very unpredictable, can be down right sneaky and has OCD so he loves to put things where he thinks they belong.
Informing you of these decisions is not part of the program, he is mostly non verbal.

I absolutely have to keep all of my firearms under lock and key and where he is not allowed to go.

In the case of an actual emergency this could present a serious problem.

In the case of having to evacuate at the drop of a hat, I would at the very least be able to grab a couple as they are not in a safe but in gun cases.
I have ammo ready to carry even closer.

Reading about the police actually breaking into houses and taking peoples guns so they think they have things under control only hardens my desire to make sure that I would at the very least know that I had self defense capabilities well in hand.
It also is causing me to reconsider having all my eggs in one box.
That box being my house.

It's time to do some homework and study my options here.
I live inside town.
There are limited actions I can undertake

Flooding is not really a concern but earthquakes are a very real possibility..

If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.

At Survivalblog recently (in the last couple of weeks) there was a post about firearm/ammunition caches - basically sealing them up with ammo in a container that's watertight/airtight/etc and burying them. Might be a good place to start?

Ah, here it is: http://www.survivalblog.com/2013/06/ammunition-caching-a-20-year-real-world-experiment-by-cache-and-carry.html

Old bald tire mounted up on a stock rim stored right in your garage, or out in the backyard...is unlikely to be confiscated or stolen. Is a very airtight container for a pistol and ammo. Pad them well so that they don't move around inside the tire. Get out the tire irons if ya don't have a buddy to mount it up. Good sharp knife will recover them quickly if needed.

The days of displaying one's beautiful collection in a nice glass front gun case are over. It makes me sad. Long guns are under lock and key. Handguns are in metal ammo cans, put away where 6 year olds can't get to them. Not really the best solution. Still trying to figure out what's best. Thinking a handgun safe with a touch pad, wall mounted, might be the solution for the main house gun. Still figuring things out.

stupid computer dropped my comment...ok, probably my fault...

I'm only a little surprised it happened here. We are about ten years behind the U.S when it comes to infringing on people's rights, but we're catching up quick. Government agents illegally entered homes, stole property and now, get this, insist on seeing proof of ownership before the firearms are returned. Kind of tough to do since we don't need to register them in the first place....
